Jaringan Intranet merupakan miniatur jaringan internet, karena jaringan ini hanya berskala lokal (jaringan lokal).

Fungsi jaringan intranet ini sama dengan jaringan internet, tetapi hanya bisa melayani jaringan lokal (LAN) saja. Tidak bisa diakses dari jaringan internet.

Jika sudah memiliki jaringan lokal (LAN), pengembangan jaringan intranat cukup dengan menambahkan perangkat seperti layanan dalam jaringan internet spt:

- DNS Server (Domain Name System Server)
- WEB Server (Layanan Informasi web based)
- Mail Server (Layanan e-mail) "optional"

DNS Server berfungsi untuk menyimpan record nama domain (misal "sekolahkita.com") agar bisa diterjemahkan ke alamat IP.

Web Server berfungsi untuk melayani request dari jaringan lokal intranet dalam bentuk web.

Mail server atau MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) berfungsi untuk memberikan layanan transformasi email dalam lingkup lokal intranet saja.

Dengan jaringan intranet ini, juga bisa dimanfaatkan untuk menyimpan informasi2 dari internet dialihkan ke server lokal. Tetapi tidak bisa dinamis.

Pemasangan jaringan intranet terlalu teknis, maaf tidak bisa disampaikan di sini. Sebagai referensi bisa membaca buku berjudul "Membangun jaringan Internet dan Intranet" karangan Daniel S Sembiring & Onno W Purbo, penerbit Elexmedia Computindo.
